CHICK COREA – PIANO, CHRISTIAN McBRIDE – BASS, JOSHUA REDMAN – SAXOPHONE, TERENCE BLANCHARD – TRUMPET, ROY HAYNES – DRUMS
Pianists Bud Powell and Thelonious Monk are first among equals on Chick's influence tree. He first heard and fell in love with their recordings in the early '50s, before he'd even reached his teens. Half a century later, they remain mentors, teachers and inspirations. Immersed in a musical universe of their own creation, these New York musical adventurers embodied their lives in their compositions. Twenty years ago, Chick recorded a tribute to Monk on ECM with Miroslav and Roy. In the '90s, he decided to offer an homage to Powell by forming this multi-generational quintet of players: Haynes the bebop veteran, of course; Terence Blanchard was only three, and Joshua Redman and Christian McBride were not yet born when Powell died in 1966. But it is Corea's vitalizing piano soloing the passionate heart of the performance generating a sense of life and energy that brings everything alive.
Chick on Christian McBride:
Christian strikes everyone as a reincarnation of every great bassist who ever lived in jazz. He’s a true phenomenon as a virtuoso on his instrument, as well as one of the most fluid improvisers on any instrument. He can play anything with a bow, and in tune too – very unusual in the jazz bass category. His groove is complete! Christian has been successfully leading his own bands for years now – combining many musical forms and bringing joy to so many with his creations. Pairing Christian, who is very young, with Roy Haynes, who is, let us say, not – is a Wonder to behold. They’re like two kids playing in a sandbox. Christian is a very strong element in the musical success of the Bud Powell Band.

Chick on Terence Blanchard:
Came to prominence playing in Art Blakey's Jazz Messengers. Fantastic trumpet chops and melodic invention. Has also made a great mark in the movie world writing creatively beautiful scores to Spike Lee’s provocative films.
A master composer, orchestrator and trumpet virtuoso, Terence is a complete musician at home with symphony orchestras as well as small groups. He blew us all away when he came in on short notice and tore the Bud Powell music up first time through.
Chick on Joshua Redman:
Joshua blasted onto the jazz scene some years ago with a tremendously vibrant and fresh spirit embodying the tradition of jazz and looking forward to its future. His father, Dewey, was already well known as a great avante-garde saxophonist. Josh's bands and music became immediately popular for jazz fans and have remained that way.
He has a very communicative way with audiences rare for "serious" jazz performers these days. He was a fantastic partner on my "Remembering Bud Powell" band project. His new musical ventures continue to intrigue me with their inventiveness.
Chick on Roy Haynes:
At 77 years old "body age," this man continues to be a bubbling and driving force on the jazz scene. The history of artists and bands he's played with is staggering starting with Charlie Parker, through Bud Powell, Monk, Coltrane, Sarah Vaughn, Miles, Getz, and every major jazz leader since. He's a walking history book of the Jazz Legacy since the mid-'40s.
I met Roy playing with Stan Getz in '67. We've since maintained a wonderful relationship in music. Together with Miroslav Vitous, we made Now He Sings, Now He Sobs one of my and Roy's most acclaimed jazz trio records. We've since played in trio format here and there through the years.
Roy has a totally unstudied and natural approach to playing drums. His sound and touch are immediately recognizable. Roy holds a position along with Elvin, Max, and then Tony, of the definition of Modern Jazz Drumming. Roy is also a vibrant entertainer he's well known for his quick and sharp wit. He'll challenge anyone with anything just for the game of it. He makes the players he plays with Sound Great and Swing Hard!
He's a Magician on drums.
