CHICK COREA – PIANO, JOHN PATITUCCI – BASS, DAVE WECKL – DRUMS

Chick may have a Spanish heart, but his roots are in straight-up 4/4 swing. Listen to his touch, the huge sound he gets from the piano. His power is ridiculous, and he doesn't have to raise his hands too far from the keyboard to get it. Actually, everyone seems relaxed on "Humpty-Dumpty." Chick recorded the tune in the mid-'70s on an album called The Mad Hatter and made it a staple of the Akoustic Band's repertoire on tours and albums at the cusp of the '90s. Together for the first time since then, their rhythmic and groove precision is spot-on from start to finish. John Patitucci is a force of nature. After goosing Chick's solo with ferocious, resonant bass lines, he soars up and down the bass on his own statement. On a much smaller kit than he normally uses, Dave Weckl plays with old-school taste, sacrificing none of the fire and brimstone that makes him an icon of rock fusion drumming. These are two of contemporary jazz's most gifted players.

xChick on John Patitucci:
I found John by following a recommendation given to me when I was looking for a rhythm section for the Elektric Band back in '85. It was the music of Claire Fischer and I was impressed by this young bass virtuoso. The rest is our history of playing together in three of my major ensembles from '85 through '95 or so: the Elektric Band, the Akoustic Band and the Time Warp Quartet. John quickly developed into a powerhouse player and performer. His six-string electric bass prowess set a new standard for facile and melodic improvisation on a "bass" – actually, he plays it more like a guitar than a bass for solos – but he can go low and groove like mad too. John had a dream to make a recording of an orchestral suite. We talked about this on the road while performing and this recording turned out to be the first production on Stretch Records. John quickly became a bass-playing icon for all young musicians on the scene and still is. He's the most complete musician I've ever heard on the "two bass instruments" – the electric and acoustic basses – a veritable master/monster on both. John has made many albums now – wonderfully original music that he writes, arranges and organizes great bands for. We've created a lasting friendship and musical partnership.

Dave WecklChick on Dave Weckl:
Every young drummer I know wants to play like Dave Weckl. He's created a unique phenomenon in the drumming world. At our Elektric Band concerts, his "drum-head" followers would squat before The Master and not ever once take their eyes off him, no matter what else was happening on stage. I've never seen anything quite like it. Dave has advanced and perfected the styles begun by the slightly earlier rock/jazz and fusion drummers in his completely unique blend of drumistics and grooves. His solo albums are wonderfully creative and musical – and he currently keeps a very active and vibrant quartet touring all over the world. Dave and John's rhythm section sound was the guts of the Elektric Band.
