CHICK COREA – PIANO, AVISHAI COHEN – BASS, JEFF BALLARD – DRUMS, STEVE WILSON – ALTO SAXOPHONE, STEVE DAVIS – TROMBONE, TIM GARLAND – TENOR SAXOPHONE
To prepare for the 21st century, Chick formed Origin, whose members were not yet born when he first arrived in New York. All grew up on Chick's music and all have a flair for navigating the Spanish, South American and Cuban styles that Chick calls his spiritual home base. During three years of constant activity, Chick composed a formidable body of music for them to play featuring an array of rhythmic gambits crisp strings of eighth and sixteenth notes, rubato orchestral voicings, montunos. Bassist Avishai Cohen and drummer Jeff Ballard are on top of him like white on rice. They don't just play the music they become it. Using a three-horn front line Steve Davis on trombone and Tim Garland and Steve Wilson on woodwind instruments Chick finds the appropriate textures for the lovely, floating rhythms and arching melody of "Armando's Tango," a song dedicated to his father.
Chick on Avishai Cohen:
The most original young performer/composer/band leader I've come across in a long time. Totally focused, totally unique rhythmically and a total virtuoso on his instrument. I produced Avishai's first recording for Stretch Records on which he immediately set a very high standard of composition and group playing. But soon after, he went on to something else. He began to play piano in his band and made a totally different band with more vamp material also very beautiful and unique. Now that that recording is made and he's done several gigs with that band and music, he's already onto an even newer band with a totally new direction. He's a Courageous Creative Spirit and a great partner to work with. I virtually took all the members of his first band to form my own band, Origin. Avishai is an inspirational character.
Chick on Jeff Ballard:
Jeff is the creative glue that has held Origin and the New Trio together. A relentless investigator of percussion styles around the globe. He and Avishai make a tight and unique rhythm team and now, as a trio, the three of us have formed a wonderful musical bond. He can play sensitively enough to blend with an orchestral string section, audacious enough to play as freely and unexpectedly as you could imagine, and basic enough to groove you into dancing your head off. He's got a great rhythm section blend. He's way more than just a "jazz drummer." He's a Music Painter.

Chick on Steve Wilson:
Steve has been a valuable contributor to much of the new music in and around New York these past years. A complete lyricist and adventurer as an improviser, Steve has held down the lead voice in the Origin horn section with continuing creativity. He has interpreted my compositions as I would have myself if I played his horns. A main asset to the Origin sound. Although not his main horn, he creates great beauty on the clarinet on "Armando's Tango."

Chick on Steve Davis:
Steve has performed and recorded with so many great musicians among them Art Blakey and Jackie McLean. One of the most melodic improvisers on any instrument! His solos are always totally singable. When I heard him play with Avishai's band, I could then envision Origin as it would become with his lyrical sound and musical flow. He adds a warmth to the Origin sound that makes the band unique.

Chick on Tim Garland:
One of the most gifted composers/players/band leaders of new music. His early recording called Enter The Fire caught my attention and inspired me so much I wanted to have him join Origin and spark the band something which he certainly has done. He continues to create many new projects always with his masterful compositional and improvisational touch. Needing a bass clarinet sound for Origin, I asked him to play one. He was not that familiar with the instrument but grasped it quickly and now has a unique sound on it as can be heard here on "Armando's Tango."
