CHICK COREA – PIANO, MICHAEL BRECKER – TENOR SAXOPHONE, EDDIE GOMEZ – BASS, STEVE GADD – DRUMS

Chick's lyrical side blossomed during his two years with Stan Getz, whose tenor saxophone sound conjured yearning and romance. It sounds like Chick drew on his Getz experience and on the soul-aflame tonal personality of John Coltrane in writing the opening passage of "Quartet No. 2, Part 1" for an ensemble he calls his dream group. Convened for a recording in 1981, the idea was to mimic a classical string quartet in terms of the structure of the compositions, but to use jazz instrumentation. These songs were never played again until this performance. Saxophonist Michael Brecker creates a flow and dramatic arc that is reminiscent of Coltrane at his finest. Bassist Eddie Gomez was working with the innovative pianist Bill Evans when Chick met him in 1965. On his solo, he sounds like an opera singer. Listen to how deftly he breaks up the time during Chick's statement while Steve Gadd – one of the great drum innovators of our time – holds everything together with rock-solid time and resourceful fills. You won't hear a pianist, bassist and drummer sound more like an equilateral triangle.

Chick on Michael Brecker:

A Magician on the tenor saxophone, Michael has been at the top of the top class of tenor saxophonists in jazz since he began years ago with the Brecker Brothers. He's one of the most sought-after musicians on the music scene in any genre. I met Michael in the '60s and we became fast friends and played many times in jam sessions when that sort of thing went on in New York. The recording we did together called Three Quartets became popular amongst the musicians and Fans Of The Inner Circle so to speak. This is the very first time that the exact quartet from that recording (1981) has re-united.

x
Chick on Steve Gadd:

I met Steve in his hometown, Rochester, in Î65, where we played together in Chuck Mangione's quintet. His musical groove and command of his instrument was an instant attraction. Steve was then my first choice for the beginning of Return To Forever 2 in 1973 – and later helped me make The Leprechaun, Mad Hatter and My Spanish Heart – my first attempts to combine jazz, Latin elements and electric music instruments with an orchestral sound. Steve was the perfect drummer for these experiments. He has always been able to hear a new piece of music and, before jumping in, give some thought to what he wanted to play – then create an entirely memorable drum kit part for that piece. His rhythmic creations for those recordings were such an integral part of the sound of that new music. Having now performed and recorded with so many of the stars of jazz and pop, he's one of the most popular and copied drummers of all time.

x
Chick on Eddie Gomez:
Eddie was one of the first bassists to take the "jazz" bass completely out of an only service role in a rhythm section. His work with the Bill Evans Trio established Eddie as one of the greatest virtuosos that the instrument has had. His melodic improvisations in the high register of the instrument make a statement like no other bassist has made. We actually met early on – around 1962 or so in New York and played together at jam sessions at Juilliard.

Eddie's presence on Three Quartets and The Leprechaun give those recordings a uniqueness that would not have been there without him.
