THE NEW CRYSTAL SILENCE Chick Corea/Gary Burton
& The Sydney Symphony
Notes on Silence By Chick Corea
Gary and I have been making duet music since 1971, and each time we perform and record, it's always a joy. This time we wanted our tours to be something special since we've been playing together for 35 years. After receiving an invitation to play with the Sydney Symphony, we had the idea of arranging some of our songs for an orchestra. As much as I would have enjoyed trying my hand at writing the arrangements, there really was no time since we were touring a lot and I didn't want to use this project to experiment with my first time writing for a large orchestra.
I had recently heard Tim Garland's orchestral music and was impressed by his creativity with orchestral writing. So I asked him if he would help me arrange and orchestrate the five songs that Gary and I chose for our set with the orchestra. We mapped out a general plan, realizing that there would only be a short time to rehearse with the orchestra. I wrote a few notes and provided some of the original scores. Gary and I made some suggestions, and then Tim took on the rest with his usual brilliance.
We present to you here the recording of the opening night at the Sydney Opera House.
The duet's orchestra music is only part of the music we've been making this past year. Our main show is the duet performance, and so we present here the duet's show at one of the oldest jazz festivals in Europe and Scandinavia - the Molde Jazz Festival, Molde, Norway. Only “Señor Mouse” is from another performance we did in Tenerife, Canary Islands.
Gary's playing continues to amaze and inspire me. The tours we've done over this past year are my favorites of all that we've done. There's more to come, but here is a slice of what we're into these days.
