I thought tonight was one of the best shows we’ve done. The band played “Silent Way” and the jam that follows for the encore - - there’s such a great atmosphere when we play that piece - - it’s a heartfelt tip of the hat to our mentor Miles.
To follow up on what I mentioned in yesterday’s note, I really do think that’s a good way to communicate on these nightly road notes. So if I can be of any help to the musicians out there, please write in and let me know how - - I’ve got tons of “cheap advice” to offer - - (By the way, if I miss a day here or there, it means the travel was hard - - I shall return).

I would appreciate to play Senor CS with my band. You played the 12/8 rhythm (or do you call it 6/4?) a bit faster in Leverkusen than John did on Industrial Zen, and I totally fell in love with the way this rhythm carried the melodic flow over the changes (with a touch of samba in in the bass while staying in the non-samba rhythm, if I remember well).
Is it daring to ask if a lead sheet of this song is available anywhere? The other way is the usual way in our band: the (amateur) keyboarder has to to capture everything by listening again and again. ;-)
I would readily pay for the material, since it would make my task easier and shorter in the always too limited time I have for making music besides my main job.
And while asking, I could add a question concerning improvising over the changes. Of course I know you guys don’t play ’scales’, but just make music, since you know all about scales inside out and have advanced ways of forming melodic lines while relating to harmonic content. Still it is of great help for someone like me to have an idea of possible scales/moods used for the changes, just to get some basic orientation. Be sure soon as I grasped that I will follow my ear and no scales. I just have to work harder to understand the basic outlines before doing so.
Any answer would be very much appreciated…
Best regards
Dirk from Germany

I would suggest you to study harmony and how notes of chords work with scales and arpeggios, it’s an extended topic.

I love the clips of the tour on youTube and hope I can see it in person…Is there any chance you will be playing in the Toronto, Canada area. I believe Montreal is your only planned Canadian show so far.
Thanks,
Frank H.

luan, I’m no beginner, so your advice doesn’t help me. I don’t ask for beginner scale concepts, just adding “fitting scales” to each chord separately, but for the development of improvising lines in context, *because* I know there’s lots of choices. So I would appreciate to get some concrete hints from someone knowing and playing this song so well.

This concert was so inspiring. Packed with all the great interactions and solos which blew me away. Vinnie was killing. John’s solos took me to another dimension, steeped in spirituality. I got so much joy, love and peace from your music. After the show I met John at the Hotel. Wow. I delivered greetings to him from our “One Word” community and we changed some words about the things we are discussing and working on at “OW”. Some minutes later you went by right in front of me, but I was so happy about the spontanious meeting with John, that I missed the chance to say hello to you. Thanks for your music and inspirations over all this decades! Please continue playing with John and the Five Peace Band. We’re waiting for the (first) CD!
How generous, to offer your advice here. I’ll definitely take this chance later during the tour.

Hello Mr. Corea, I saw you in Seville with Touchstone, and I saw you in Lorca with RTF, both was great concerts, I will see you again in Malaga next day 17th.
I have finished to read the biography of Mr Miles Davis by Ian Carr, I hope can hear “In a Silent way” play by you and Mr McLaughing.
Your music is great and I wait my english will be not too bad.
I was the man with the pic of the Romantic Warrior in Lorca where you and all in RTF signed me.
Thank you very much for your music.

Hello Chiquito
Warm greetings to you from Bolivia.
I have a couple of questions.
You and John putting together the Five Peace Band is quite a milestone in music and a great luxury to have Kenny, Christian and Vinnie joining.
Would the FPB go in the studio with new music?
Both you and John have shared musically with many other jazz greats like Miles Davis. But also both of you have a special relation with flamenco and of course with Paco. Could that be a key to summon up some acoustic guitar and piano duet or even perhaps a trio if Paco was around?
Even though it’s hard for great artists like your self to come to Bolivia your music does and I thank you for that. Keep creating and inspiring the world!!
Warmly
Gabriel
Peace!

Chick, I would love to talk music with you all night! You seem to genuinely care about the fans and music and I’m sure all of us appreciate that. I know I do! I feel like I’m part of a select group of people because jazz/fusion isn’t mainstream or commercial, and that makes it so much better because it’s so much closer to the heart and personal.
I do hope you make a recording with Johnji, or a DVD to capture this moment in musical/cultural history!
I look forward to meeting you on the 23rd in London and please give Johnji my regards.
To Jimknopf, check out this website http://www.italway.it/morrone/WBTG-scores.htm

nishad, thanks a lot: that saves me considerable transcription time!
I’m still uncertain what kind of musical advice, on which musician level, Chick Corea is willing to give. I’m no beginner, but also not more than an advanced amateur, and can’t offer masterclass understanding. Should I better forget about asking?
